Identification of Factors Influencing the Adoption of the Internet of Things in the Supply Chain: A Case Study of Hospitals in Tehran Province

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify the dimensions, components, and indicators influencing the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the supply chain of hospitals in Tehran Province.

Methodology: This study employed a qualitative exploratory design within an interpretive paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 12 participants, including government hospital managers and academic experts selected via purposive sampling. Interview transcripts were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Credibility was enhanced through data triangulation, negative case analysis, and participant checking. MaxQDA2020 software was used to organize and analyze the qualitative data.

Findings: The findings revealed that IoT adoption factors in hospital supply chains fall into three major dimensions: technical, economic, and social. The technical dimension comprises components such as improved operational efficiency, system support and maintenance, data monitoring, appropriate technology use, security and privacy, and enhanced product quality. The economic dimension includes optimized financial resource management, increased financial transparency, and cost reduction accompanied by improved profitability. The social dimension encompasses cultural and educational changes, enhanced collaboration and interaction, and improved customer experience. The extracted indicators demonstrate that these dimensions collectively influence IoT adoption and can significantly improve supply chain performance within hospitals.

Conclusion: IoT adoption in hospital supply chains is shaped by a combination of technical, economic, and social factors. Understanding these dimensions provides essential insights for effective planning, policymaking, and implementation of IoT technologies. Addressing issues such as security, staff training, cost management, and infrastructural readiness is crucial for ensuring successful technology adoption.
