Determining the Relationship between Children's and Parents' Demographic Information in the Construction of a Child's Cultural Identity (Case Study: Children of Evaz County)

Abstract

Purpose: The cultural identity of any society refers to the collective beliefs, customs and traditions of a culture, nation, tribe or group. Examining the factors related to the construction of a child's cultural identity can help design and implement programs to improve their cultural identity. As a result, the present research was conducted with the aim of determine the relationship between children's and parents' demographic information in the construction of a child's cultural identity.

Methodology: The present research was a descriptive correlational study. The research population consisted of 4353 boys and girls primary school children of Evaz County, which 345 people of them were selected as samples with using purposive sampling method. The instruments of the present research were included a demographic information form (including parental education, parental employment, number of children, family income, age and gender) and a researcher-made questionnaire of child cultural identity. The data of the present research were analyzed with using one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficient and independent t-test in SPSS software.

Findings: The findings of this research showed that the difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on the education of their parents was significant and the children's cultural identity with fathers and mothers with higher education was higher (P<0.001). The difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on the employment of their parents was significant and the children's cultural identity with fathers and mothers with government jobs was higher (P<0.05). In addition, the difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on the number of children was significant and the cultural identity of only children was higher (P<0.001). The difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on family income was significant and the children's cultural identity with higher family income was higher (P<0.001). Also, there was a positive and significant relationship between child's cultural identity and children's age (P<0.01). In addition, the difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on the gender of the children was not significant and the cultural identity of girls and boys was almost equal (P>0.05).

Conclusion: The results of this research showed that there was a difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on the demographic variables of parental education, parental employment, number of children, family income and age, but there was no difference between the level of children's cultural identity based on the demographic variable of gender. As a result, it is necessary to design and implement programs to improve and promote children's cultural identity through improving effective demographic information.
